Lawsuit filed by cheerleaders against allegedly drunk driver

Former mayor failed sobriety test after rear-ending girls' vehicle

Four cheerleaders have launched a negligence lawsuit against the former mayor of a Southern California city following an alleged DUI car accident, according to NBC 4 News. The former mayor rear-ended the cheerleaders' vehicle at a stop light and was described by police at the scene as behaving as though he was inebriated. The girls, who are aged 14 to 17, suffered a variety of injuries and some of them may never be able to return to cheerleading.

Accident at stop light

The four girls were just returning from a pep rally at their school and were only two blocks from their home at the time of the accident, according to the Los Angeles Times. They were stopped at a red light when the mayor's full-size vehicle struck them from behind. The accident left their car totaled, with the back window shattered, the doors jammed shut, and the rear section suffering serious damage.

All four girls in the car were injured and had to be taken to hospital, with one of the girls suffering a broken neck. According to her attorney, her injuries may keep her from ever returning to cheerleading again.

Mayor appeared inebriated

According to police who responded to the accident, the mayor appeared to be inebriated. He failed a field sobriety testing, registering a 0.08 blood alcohol content level, but did pass a breathalyzer test. Despite resigning as mayor following the accident, he was afterwards reelected to the city council in November.

The girls accuse the mayor of negligence, saying he willfully disregarded the safety of other motorists on the road by choosing to drink and drive. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but the girls say, despite being the victims of the crash, they have nonetheless been subject to online abuse by the former mayor's supporters.

Motor vehicle accidents

Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents across the country. When a person chooses to drink and drive, he not only puts his or her own life in danger, but the lives of all other motorists on the road. Those who have been injured because of a drunk driver understand the hurt and anger that often arises because of the needlessness of such accidents.

Although no amount of legal action can ever make up for such pain, victims of drunk drivers should not hesitate in reaching out to a personal injury attorney. These types of accidents can leave victims dealing with costly medical bills and lost income and an experienced attorney may be able to offer help in getting compensation to cope with these high expenses.
