Spinal
Injury
Often people can sustain serious injury to their
spinal cord in many different types of
accidents. The spinal cord is a group of nerves that carries messages from the brain
to the body which is enclosed and protected by the
spinal column, which is made up of individual
vertebrae in the neck, mid and low back. The
area of spinal
cord injury along the spinal column will determine where
in the body effects will be sustained. Injury to
the upper portion or "cervical" spinal
cord often results in quadriplegia. Injury to the
middle portion or "thoracic" spinal cord may cause paraplegia,
and injury to the lower portion or "lumbar" spinal
cord
can cause paraplegia or decreased function in the
legs and feet.
The leading cause of spinal cord injury in the
United States is motor vehicle accidents. Spinal
cord injury can also be caused by slip and fall
accidents, recreational or sports injuries, work
related injuries, and
diseases. People who sustain spinal cord injuries are likely to have
a dramatic change in their quality of living.
We can help victims who have sustained spinal
cord injury.
