A 30-year-old man has been arrested following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of several members of a young family. California police say the man is suspected of driving drunk and causing the fatal car accident that killed three people, including a 6-month-old baby. The man is facing multiple charges, and he is likely focused on preparing criminal defense at this time.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 30-year-old man driving an SUV ran a red light downtown and smashed into a minivan carrying a family of five. The man was reportedly traveling fast enough that the van was dragged some 25 feet down the street before striking a curb and catching fire. First responders mobilized immediately, including 25 firefighters and four ambulances.
A man believed to be in his 30s, as well as his daughter and a baby, were all killed in the crash. The child’s mother as well as a 9-year-old boy were both taken to local hospitals in critical condition. The driver of the SUV also suffered critical injuries and is reportedly still in the hospital. He will face the charges filed against him, including DUI and vehicular manslaughter, when he is released from medical care.
Of course, the magnitude of this tragedy cannot be understated. A fatal car accident of this type will take a long time for California authorities to fully investigate, but at this stage in the investigation, it seems likely the driver of the SUV could face criminal consequences for his involvement in the crash. Regardless, the family is entitled under state law to file wrongful death and/or personal injury lawsuits against him in civil court, often relying upon the same evidence used by prosecutors in criminal court.
