Earlier this month on a late Thursday night, a vehicle drove into Destiny Daycare in Inglewood on Arbor Vitae Street, near Oak Street. Nobody was inside the facility at the time of the incident however, the building suffered significant damage to its façade and the vehicle had to be removed from the building before the Arbor Vitae could re-open to the public. It is unclear if the driver was injured or under the influence during the accident.
Regardless of the specific cause of this accident, pedestrian should always be watching out for unusual behavior from motorists. Driving under the influence and distracted driving killed more than 10,000 people in 2016 alone and approximately one third of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders. Distracted driving and drunk accidents are entirely preventable as long as motorists cooperate. If you find yourself at a party and you are under the influence, do not drive. Find another way home with a friend, ride share app or taxi service. By going behind the wheel, you risk your own life as well as everyone else around you. On a similar note, you put everyone else’s safety behind your own when you look at your phone while driving. In the time, it takes to read a text message or open an app, a child or adult may have stepped into a crosswalk. This can apply to pedestrians as well as people often step into crosswalks or alleyways while watching their phone. Do not become another statistic and always be alert.
