One unfortunate cyclist is clinging to life following a collision in San Jose, according to local police. Officers in the California city responded to the crash, which happened on the morning of Nov. 2. While many bicycle accidents are fatal, even those where the cyclist survives can cause devastating physical injuries. This could result in criminal and/or civil action being taken against the driver involved.
Very little information is currently available about the crash, which happened on East Santa Clara Street around 11 a.m. It appears that a bicyclist was struck by a late-model pickup truck, though the exact reasons for the crash have not yet been uncovered. The driver was not identified in the report, but police have confirmed this individual remained on the scene following the crash.
The cyclist was rushed to a local hospital with injuries considered life-threatening by medical personnel. Local police closed down the street at two intersections and remained on the scene for the next several hours. This investigation remains ongoing, and so far, no charges have been filed.
Bicycle accidents open cyclists to even more personal injury than a car accident, since even a minor bump can send a rider tumbling. Depending on how well the cyclist in this case recovers, he or she could suffer lifelong injuries or disabilities as a result of this crash. This is why, even if formal criminal charges are not filed, the state of California offers the option to injured parties to file civil suits against individuals responsible for these types of accidents.
