How Many People Die In Dui Accidents In Los Angeles

How many people die in DUI accidents in Los Angeles?

Southern California residents should be aware of the true level of risk they face due to the actions of people who choose to drink and drive.

Despite increasingly tough penalties, too many people in Southern California continue to make the choice to drive after they have been consuming alcohol. Such a decision on the part of drivers continues to contribute to serious, tragic and unnecessary outcomes for innocent victims.

Recent examples highlight continued risk

Finding examples of drunk driving activity in and around Los Angeles is sadly rather simple. A quick online search reveals incidents like a crash near La Serna High School that injured five people and killed another. KTLA reports that the victim who died was only 14 years old. The driver was a 19-year-old male who was allegedly speeding and then lost control of his vehicle, overturning it in the process. He now faces vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving charges. The parents of the boy who died face a grief that they should never have had to experience.

In addition to accidents that claim lives, other crashes occur that could well have resulted in such tragic outcomes. Take, for example, the head-on wreck that the Los Angeles Times indicates was caused by an actress who was then arrested for drunk driving. Both drivers were treated for injuries but the reports indicate none were serious.

Another story that shows how far-reaching drunk driving problems are involved a woman in a managerial position driving a city vehicle. The Daily Breeze explains that she was arrested after an accident that did not involve any injuries.

Statistics back up the risk in California

A review of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that the number of people who died in drunk driving accidents in California in 2013 and 2014 was greater than in the previous few years. Details include the following:

  • In 2010 and 2011, a total of 774 people died each year statewide.
  • In 2010 and 2011, 161 and 130 drunk driving fatalities occurred in Los Angeles County, respectively.
  • In 2012, California’s DUI deaths increased to 829 and Los Angeles County’s deaths increased to 165.
  • In 2013, there were 883 lives lost in the state and 187 in the county.
  • In 2014, the state recorded 882 drunk driving deaths and the county recorded 170 drunk driving deaths

In neighboring San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, 346 and 337 people died over the course of the five years spanning from 2010 to 2014. San Diego County lost 301 lives to drunk drivers and Orange County lost another 201 lives.
